Hot work mounted leading-edge self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) are constructed from materials that resist damage from flames and sparks that would cause standard SRLs to fray, melt, or burn. Mounted SRLs are typically longer than personal SRLs, which allows workers to move farther away from the anchor point. They also tend to be heavier than personal SRLs and are generally left mounted in place on the anchor point. Some mounted SRLs come with a tag line that helps workers reach the SRL from the ground. Hot work SRLs are typically used by workers who are welding, grinding, or performing other hot work at heights.

Leading-edge self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) resist fraying, friction damage, and breaking when used over a sharp leading edge, such as a rooftop. They can be tied off overhead, at shoulder level, or at foot level. SRLs connect a worker’s safety harness to an anchor point on a building or structure to stop the worker from free-falling and help prevent injury if he or she goes over the edge. SRLs attach to the D-ring on the harness and extend and retract as the worker moves freely. If the worker starts to fall, the SRL will brake suddenly to stop the fall. Energy-absorbing webbing at the end of the lifeline helps absorb the force of the fall. SRLs let workers move farther away from an anchor point than would be possible with shock-absorbing lanyards. They usually stop a fall within 2 to 4 ft. and require less fall clearance than shock-absorbing lanyards.
