Kevlar sebenarnya adalah nama dagang dari bahan aramid, atau merek terkenal lainnya Nomex dan Technora. Material yang punya nama asli Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide ini ditemukan oleh Stephanie Kwolek, saat bekerja di DuPont pada 1965. Kwolek dan menemukan serat baru yang ringan namun kuat untuk digunakan pada ban. Tujuannya adalah mendapatkan bobot ringan sehingga mendapatkan penggunaan bahan bakar yang lebih ekonomis. Hingga suatu ketika Kwolek mendapatkan suatu formulasi dengan wujud keruh. Sayang material ini tidak seperti yang diinginkan oleh DuPont, bahkan tampilannya dibuang. Namun Kwolek tampil untuk melakukan pengujian dengan ilmuwan lainnya yaitu Charles Smullen. Hasilnya cukup mengejutkan bahwa kemampuan serat tersebut jauh melampaui ekspetasi yang ada. Bahkan DuPont mengatakan bahwa penemuan racikan polymer ini akan mengubah wajah industri di masa depan.
Kevlar is actually a trade name of aramid material, or other well-known brands Nomex and Technora. The material, which has the original name Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide, was invented by Stephanie Kwolek, while working at DuPont in 1965. Kwolek and found a new fiber that is light but strong for use in tires. The goal is to get a light weight so as to get a more economical use of fuel. Until one day Kwolek got a formulation with a cloudy form. Unfortunately this material is not what DuPont wanted, it even looks discarded. However, Kwolek appeared to conduct testing with other scientists, namely Charles Smullen. The results are quite surprising that the capabilities of these fibers far exceed the existing expectations. Even DuPont says that the discovery of this polymer compound will change the face of the industry in the future.
